Taking time out from the real world has encouraged husband and wife team Mike Gilbert and Sam Warrender to share their sense of adventure and help others hit the highway in style with new motorcycle touring and rental business Beatnik Motorsport.

How did you come up with the concept in the first place and why Marlborough?

After living in Dubai for many years we seized an opportunity to wrap it all up and travel for a year with our son who was one-and-a-half years old at the time.

Through this experience we began to realise how fortunate we were to have the opportunity for this time 'away from the real world' and we began to think about how great it would be if we could help other people experience a bit of excitement and freedom as well.

Long story short, we combined my petrol head tendencies with my wife Samantha's eye for style and the concept was born. When picking the location, Marlborough had the climate, the access to amazing scenery and roads, major tourism attractions (sounds and vineyards), comparatively lower operating costs and great potential for growth. No other area of New Zealand had this 'perfect mix' of elements we were looking for.

Ducati Motorcycles and Vespa scooters sound like a lot of fun, why did you go with those particular models?

Beatnik company owners and husband and wife team Mike Gilbert and Samantha Warrender hope their new business will bring more visitors to Marlborough.

Our first priority is to ensure a quality adventure for our clients. There is no other form of two-wheeled travel that brings out the romance of a day in vine country quite like the Vespa.

For the motorcycles we picked the well-respected brand of Ducati and their Scrambler models which are very stylish and have a classic retro feel about them but also have all the modern technology to ensure a fun and reliable experience.

Where did the name Beatnik come from?

Shortly after we'd left Dubai we decided to start an Instagram account to share our upcoming adventures. My wife, Sam, came up with the name Beatnik, which means "one who avoids conventional behaviour, dress etc."  We thought that was a fitting description for us as we explored and experienced our way around the globe and we think it's a great fit for the business as well.
